You know the importance of quiet time with God, and you’re ready to start a routine. What is the best way to connect with God? These quiet time with God ideas will help you develop your own routine, that suits your own specific needs.
You do not need to implement all of these ideas to connect with God. Start with prayer and one other action for your quiet time with God routine. As you get into the daily habit, you can try other ways to grow your faith.
1) Pray
Prayer is a powerful tool that allows us to communicate with God and to develop a deeper relationship with Them. When we pray, we open up our hearts and minds to God, and They can speak to us in return. Additionally, prayer can help us to find peace and strength in difficult times. For these reasons, I encourage you to make prayer a priority during your quiet time with the Lord.
Whether you’re praying silently or out loud, whether you’re journaling your prayers or reading from a prayer book, the important thing is that you’re spending time talking to God. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to pray—simply start by talking to God from your heart, and They will surely hear you.

2) Read the Bible
Spending time reading the Bible is one of the most important things a Christian can do. It strengthens our faith, comforts us in hard times, and gives us wisdom and knowledge. Even if we don’t always understand everything we read, spending time in God’s Word can help us to grow in our faith and to better understand God’s will for our lives.
However, many Christians struggle to find the time to read the Bible on a regular basis. (This used to be me!) But you can begin the habit of consistent Bible reading by incorporating it into your quiet time. These tips will help you get started.
Choose a specific translation of the Bible that you will use for your quiet time with God. There are many different versions available, so start with one that you are comfortable reading. Later on, you might consider using multiple translations as part of your Bible study.
Don’t try to tackle the entire Bible at once! Start with a shorter book, such as one of the Gospels or one of the Epistles. As you become more comfortable with regular Bible reading, you can gradually increase the amount you read each day.
If you need something structured to get you started, try a topical Bible reading plan. She Reads Truth offers multiple FREE Bible reading plans on their website and in their app. You can also choose to purchase one of their Bible studies.
I’ve also worked through two Bible studies created by The Daily Grace Co. These are frequently on sale for just $10 each. These Bible studies are not as challenging as the ones offered by She Reads Truth, so they’re great for beginners.
Finally, a scripture-writing plan is a quick and easy way to get started with daily Bible reading.
Scripture Writing
I’ve created two scripture-writing plans that will take 10 minutes or less each day, depending on how quickly you write.

3) Journal
There are many ways to incorporate journaling as part of your quiet time with God routine. This is what I do.
I write scripture, and I journal prayers. I use the same journal for both practices, but you can choose to have multiple journals.
One journal I keep at my reading nook to use during my quiet time. I use this journal for writing any scripture that really speaks to me and for writing my personal prayers.
The other journal is at my desk. I use this journal for writing Bible verses and prayers from Facebook. At the beginning of 2022, I asked my Facebook friends to share their favorite Bible verses with me. I wrote down their names and their verses in my planner. Each week, I write that verse in my journal, and I ask them for prayer requests. Then I write a prayer in my journal. I take a picture of the prayer and send it to them over Facebook. Finally, I look over that Bible verse, and I read through my prayer, each day that week.
4) Read a Devotion
Reading a daily devotion is a great way to ease into a quiet time with God routine. A devotion is usually a short reading from the Bible accompanied by an inspirational passage. This provides an opportunity to reflect on scripture and consider how it applies to your life.
For new Christians, devotions can be especially helpful in getting started on their journey with Christ. They provide a structured way to learn about the Bible and grow in their faith. For busy Christians, devotions can be a great way to connect with God when time is limited. Even if you only have a few minutes to spare, reading a devotion can help to refocus your mind on what is truly important.
Whether you are just starting out on your faith journey or you are looking for ways to deepen your relationship with God, consider adding devotions to your quiet time routine.
5) Relax
Quiet time with God is a chance to be still before the Lord. It’s a few minutes during your day to relax and enjoy God’s presence. Setting this up will look different for everyone.
Maybe it looks like reading your Bible in a comfy chair with a cup of hot tea, or listening to worship music as you reflect on God’s goodness. Perhaps it means taking a relaxing bath by candlelight with a glass of wine and your Bible, or enjoying a refreshing glass of lemon water on the patio as you pray. Whatever helps you to feel peaceful and connected to God, make it a priority to do that during your quiet time.
As for me, I struggle to quiet all the worries in my head. That’s why I start my quiet time by taking a few deep breaths and saying a simple prayer.
“Lord, help me focus. Help me learn. Help me grow. In Christ’s name, Amen.”
Carving out this special time each day will help you to feel more centered and grounded, and it will give you the opportunity to connect with God on a deeper level. So go ahead and light those candles, put on that soft music, and sip on your favorite beverage – it’s time to relax and enjoy some quality time with your Heavenly Parent.
Final Thoughts
Remember: don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. If you attempt all of these quiet time with God ideas on your very first day, you might be overwhelmed and give up! Like I said, start with prayer and one other action.
As you develop your own quiet time routine, you will discover what works best for you. Over time, you will also realize that flexibility is key, as you adjust your routine to the seasons of life.
I hope these quiet time with God ideas inspire your own faith journey. What does your quiet time routine look like?
