My mother found Christian inspiration from many sources: her ministers, friends at church, famous Christian women, a multitude of devotionals for women and prayer books for women, and more.
But she didn’t always connect to the prayers she read. She didn’t always feel like her prayer books related to her life as a middle-aged wife and stay-at-home-mom.
My mother started writing her own prayers, which you can now purchase on Amazon to read on your Kindle.
She wrote about finding God in the ordinary, in the everyday life.
Sometimes God does give us big, beautiful, awe-inspiring blessings. A significant raise at work. Remission from a serious illness. An unexpected double rainbow.
But God also blesses us daily. God blesses us in the ordinary.
Finding God’s Blessings in the Ordinary
As Christians, we should seek out God’s blessings every single day. Before you can thank God for Her blessings, you have to first see them! Here all the small blessings I’ve noticed as I go about my typical day.
- my comfortable bed to sleep in
- a loving husband who kisses me good-bye each morning
- clothing to wear for all possible climates
- an abundance of nutritious food to eat each day
- a dishwasher filled with clean dishes
- my laptop which enables me to work remotely and stay in contact with long-distance loved ones
- the beautiful birds, butterflies, and bees who fly around my garden and bring a smile to my face
- PR samples from brands who hope I’ll like their products
- books, blogs, TV shows, and YouTube videos that entertain me when I need rest
- a stunning sunset with brilliant shades of pink only seen because my husband and I decided to play Pokémon Go at night
Nothing on this list is monumental. You might even say that nothing on this list is life-changing–but I disagree. Every single one of these small blessings improves my life, often daily.
I try to thank God daily for all my blessings, big and small. Sometimes I get so busy that I just forget. Other times I’m so focused on what I don’t have that I don’t appreciate everything I do have.
But I truly do want to find God’s blessings in the ordinary.
I want to find God in the everyday.
I want to thank God daily for everything She has provided.
I’m a work-in-progress, a sinner who falls short of God’s glory daily. But I am working on it. I am striving to thank God for all my blessings, big and small.
When I notice my small blessings, I also begin to find God in the ordinary.
Noticing God in the Ordinary
When I start to notice my small blessings, I also start to notice the hand of God in all things.
Take the sunset that my husband and I recently enjoyed while playing Pokémon Go. We went out Wednesday evening to play. It’s been a stressful week for me. I stayed up late working Tuesday night and again Wednesday night. I knew Wednesday was going to be another long night, and I wondered if I really had time to walk with my husband for half an hour.
But I remembered the importance of quality time with my spouse, which I don’t always prioritize like I should. I also remembered the importance of walking for my health. I don’t exercise enough, and walking while playing Pokémon Go is so easy!
So I took time out of my day to prioritize my marriage and my health, knowing I would sacrifice a little extra sleep by doing this.
And God rewarded me with one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. Such brilliant shades of pink peeking through the trees! It was a glorious sight to behold!
God reminded me of why I need to leave the house, both to spend quality time with my husband and to take care of the body God has given me. Making these small choices allowed me to bask in God’s creation!
I find God in the ordinary in other ways too.
The creatures in my garden remind me of the wonder of God’s creation. She created such a variety of pollinators to provide for a variety of beautiful plants and flowers.
But the creatures in my garden also remind me of my responsibilities as a Christian. God calls Christians to be stewards of the earth. We are supposed to look after God’s creation. My garden is just one small contribution by my husband and me to provide for God’s creatures.
Seeking God in the Ordinary
Sometimes God reveals Herself to me in ordinary moments. Other times I need to seek God myself in the ordinary.
The first blog post I ever wrote for this website is about finding time for prayer. I offer five creative solutions.
- Pray first thing in the morning while still in bed.
- Pray at night, right before bed.
- Pray on the toilet.
- Pray in the car.
- Pray before meals.
These are all prayer times I try to do throughout the week, even if I don’t manage all of them daily. These are small, ordinary moments during my day. While my prayers aren’t very long during these occasions, any intentional prayer is better than none.
While researching this post, I found a great blog post on Catholic Mom titled “God in the Ordinary.” It offers practical advice for seeking God in the ordinary.
How many people can you pray for when you fold a load of laundry? How many times can you call down God’s blessing upon your family as you pack their lunch or prepare dinner? How many times does your heart ache when you call to mind someone who is sick or suffering? Why not lift them up in prayer by name while you wash dishes or sweep the garage? That stuff is a huge part of our everyday life, so ask God to meet you there!
Wow. Talk about convicting.
I do the dishes every single day, often more than once a day. I’ve never prayed while doing the dishes. Why not? It’s a fairly mindless activity. Why am I not dedicating that five or ten minutes to God?
The next time I do the dishes, I plan on praying out loud.
I do multiple loads of laundry throughout the week. This will be another opportunity for me to pray.
Recently I attended a webinar about finding time for God in a busy day. The instructor suggested listening to the Bible! I’ve tried this a few times with my Echo and Echo Dot. There are multiple Alexa skills available to listen to the Bible or devotionals. This is so easy to do when getting ready for the morning or when cooking.
